Equipment:

  • White tile
  • Spatula
  • Curved blade scalpel
  • Knitting needle
  • Needle
  • Ball end tool
  • Mini grater
  • Black accent beads - optional
  • Polymer clay – Caramel, translucent, dark brown, red, black and white
  • Liquid Polymer clay

Method:

  1. Bake a ball of dark brown clay about 2cm in diameter at your clays recommended temperature. Then mix the caramel and translucent clay together in the ratio of 2:1

  1. Next grate the baked dark brown clay and mix into the caramel and translucent. This adds texture.

  1. Roll the clay to a thickness of 2mm. Then using a needle mark out the shape of a gingerbread man. The gingerbread man can be as big or as small as you like depending on what scale you wish to make for 12th scale make the gingerbread about 12mm in height.

  1. Cut out the shape do not worry about it being perfect.

  1. Now using the side of the knitting needle smooth the edges of your gingerbread man; using the needle add a mouth and using the ball ended tool add eyes.

  1. Make a 1cm ball of red clay and pour a small amount of the liquid polymer clay onto the white tile.

  1. Taking the spatula blend together to form a sticky paste.

  1. Blend until smooth soft clay, for example Fimo soft is best for this technique as it blends easily.

  1. Using the needle put the red paste onto the gingerbread man forming his suit and bake in the oven at the recommended temperature for 5 minutes. This hardens the paste and allows you to add more colour without it mixing.

  1. Repeat steps 6-8 with first the black clay and then the white clay. Add the black paste to the gingerbread man and bake again at the recommended temperature for 5 minutes.

  1. I store my mixed pastes in miniature biscuit tins ready to use for next time.

  1. Finally add the white paste using the needle at this point you may wish to use accent beads as little buttons. The gingerbread man is now place into the oven to bake for the recommended time of your clay. For example my gingerbread man has already spent 10 minutes in the oven however, my clay recommends 20 minutes so I bake him for another 20 minutes. AS long as you make sure the oven is at the correct temperature the clay will not burn.

  1. Remove the gingerbread man from the oven and leave to cool. Once cool you may wish to varnish him.
